I'm here in Nairobi moving ubuni forward, but the reason i first came to Kenya last year was music - another story for another time. But last night the two passions collided when a crew of Nairobi hiphop artists came round with Mathieu Bruno from the East Africa Rise Up project. The cherry on top of the cake (but maybe not for my neighbours) was the freestyle session into the early hours of the morning.
Right from the outset one of my personal ubuni course areas of interest is in how to empower talented people to move themselves forward with social media marketing tailored to whatever is it they are passionate about. if i had needed any encouragement then last night was surely it - how useful information can change a mindset and raise new hope and encourage dreams.
These guys are passionate about what they do, but with no rescue helicopters in sight to drop $'s on their musical careers and a zillion obstacles to monetising their talents, its hard to stay positive or know how to change their outcomes. But these guys were 'change ready' and demanded with passion the whys, the hows, the actions of branding and marketing themselves and their music online.
There are some people who might not like me for this, have the feeling they'll be tweeting and posting music everywhere with a vengeance. But the interesting thing that followed in the discussions is the power that lots of individuals all looking after their own 'brand', taking ownership of their own marketing, not waiting for someone to drop $ from the sky, can have as a collective.
That's the thing with social change - it has to happen with the individual first - but lots of individuals make a movement - a movement changes things forever.
